Birding Highlights
-

Diverse Habitats
Floodplain forests, agricultural lands, mudflats, open lakes, and more make up the diverse collection of habitats found in the piedmont region.
-

Well-balanced Birding
Whether it’s winter waterfowl, fall shorebirding, or spring warbler migration, there’s always a reason to get out and go birding.
-

Accessible Locations
The piedmont region is home to most of North Carolina’s population, and with that comes well-maintained and accessible public parks and outdoor recreation areas. Some popular spots include Lake Lynn, Brumley Nature Preserve, and Weymouth Woods.

Anything Can Happen
The piedmont may not have the reputation for producing rarities like the coast, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. For example, this Red-footed Booby was found in March 2023 sitting on the boardwalk at Yates Mill County Park. Other crazy birds seen in the piedmont in recent years include Black-legged Kittiwake, White-winged Crossbill, and Varied Thrush.
